Raymond Pettibon’s writings embraced the expanse of social-media digital technology while allowing a more intimate glimpse at the artist. Between February 2011 and February 2021, Pettibon posted something in the region of eighteen thousand digital comments on Twitter.

This eclectic collection demonstrates the range of Pettibon’s thinking as he embarks on an artistic enlightenment project. Pettibon’s digital writings reveal the artist in a creative-informal rather than critical-formal mode. They flesh out ideas elucidated in his artworks, none of which are represented here.

The twits cover topics as varied as golf, oral, life, and art history—subjects chosen at random for broad appeal andexamined with passion and insight.

Raymond Pettibon’s (b. 1957) influential oeuvre engages a wide spectrum of American iconography variously pulled from literature, art history, philosophy, religion, politics, sports, and alternative youth culture, among other sources. Intermixing image and text, his drawings engage the visual rhetorics of pop and commercial culture while incorporating language from mass media as well as classic texts by writers such as William Blake, Marcel Proust, John Ruskin, and Walt Whitman.

I’m originally from the Ozarks. Back then, I loved crafting a bit more than bass fishing. So, after art school, I hitchhiked to Los Angeles. That decision was a no-brainer — which was good since I had little extra to spare. What I didn’t know back then was this: Every Hollywood hipster can spot poor, destitute country folk — like me — a mile away. That’s probably one reason why, after all these years, I’ve never been invited to exhibit art in Tinseltown. Another reason might be that my “story” has been anything but unique. On the contrary, it registers as irrelevant by any Southern California metric…

Delineates Global Climate Catastrophe Denial

(Los Angeles—June 1, 2019) LG Williams and The Estate of LG Williams™ are pleased to present Don’t Look At That Tree, his newest monumental outdoor artwork installed at City Park in Streator, Illinois.

Don’t Look At That Tree consists of a 100-foot-high hickory tree strewn with several rolls of yellow crime scene tape. Visitors can view the artwork on June 28, 2019 and it will remain visible to the public until June 30, 2019. The artwork will be situated at the intersection of Park and Hickory streets, near the park’s entrance.

This artwork explores The Mechanism of Denial, a defense mechanism first proposed by Anna Freud which involves an individual or groups refusal to accept reality, thus blocking external events from awareness. “So far”, writes LG Williams, “our response to the challenge of our climate catastrophe exposes a fundamental failure of collective engagement and imagination.”

Williams’s first monumental outdoor tree artwork appeared in 2013 at Parc du Domaine les Crayères, Reims, France, curated by Baron Osuna. As with other works by the artist, such as Party Down! (1999), How To Explain Art To The Sports Generation (2004), Angelina Jolie Was Here! (2011), and ME (2015), subversive ingenuity is key to the experiential nature of the artwork.

Taken whole, Don’t Look At That Tree speaks to the expanse of art history — from ancient traditions of creating artworks on cave walls, to modern forms of visual culture in the age of apocalypse and cutting-edge feats of artistic digital labor.

The Book Of…[Your Name Here]

The Book Of … is a series of photography books by American artist LG Williams. The Book Of [Your Name Here] series, originating in January 2015, is an artistic re-examination of the “miracle” of the daguerreotype photograph, in which the artist reaches back to the birth of photography.

On August 19, 1839 the French Academy of Sciences announced the invention of the daguerreotype by the scene painter and physicist Louis-Jaques-Mande Daguerre (1787-1851). Word of the discovery spread swiftly, and the daguerreotype photography enjoyed great popularity until the 1850s, especially in America where the process was free from patent restrictions.

While there was great demand for portraits captured by the “miracle” of photography, early daguerreotype technology had its shortcomings. The necessarily long exposure times that were required to capture an image, fifteen minutes on average under bright lights, led to necessarily inevitable lacunae in representing the subject. The resulting single image daguerreotypes are de facto composites of the lapsed long exposure time, but not, as was purported, scientifically captured replicas of both time and image.

This publication and series presents an opportunity for Williams to provide an artistic, political, and social perspective on the missing truths, images, and loss of time that occurred during the age of Daguerre. In other words, each book from this single-portrait-series consists of hundreds of continuous images during a fifteen-minute stretch of time, or just about as many images as the artist could take as fast as possible using his out-dated FujiFilm FinePix Z70 3-MP Digital Camera. From this historical perspective, Williams’ series points to the limitations of daguerreotype photography with the seemingly limitless possibilities of contemporary analogue-image capture and production.
