Letter To The United States Joint Chief of Staffs
This letter proposes a Bureau of Art Intelligence to defend America from the alleged threat of subversive foreign art, rogue-nation ceramics, and terrorist miniatures infiltrating museums. Williams weaponizes the Cold War history of CIA-supported Abstract Expressionism and turns it into a lunatic post-9/11 security doctrine for galleries, collections, and curators. The joke is devastating because it exposes how easily art can be drafted into paranoia when culture is treated as ideological warfare. The Metropolitan Museum, Honolulu Academy of Art, Oriental Institute, Field Museum, and Whitney become not cultural institutions but soft targets, Trojan horses, and intelligence failures. Beneath the farce is a serious art-historical indictment: if governments once understood art as power, then today's museums should not pretend that aesthetics are innocent.
