Salaryman / Superman At Tana Gallery Bookstore
This exhibition booklet presents Salaryman / Superman at TANA Gallery Bookshelf in Tokyo as a fusion of Japanese work culture and superhero mythology. Williams links Superman's alter ego to the salaryman's uniformed duty, exhaustion, and office-bound commitment, treating shirt, shoes, socks, wallet, jacket, tie, underwear, glasses, and overcoat as the costume of ordinary endurance. The text expands into a theory of superhero consciousness that crosses religion, nationality, comics, manga, vengeance, morality, and archetype. Wolverine, Batman, Superman, Dirty Harry, Rambo, Wonder Woman, Buffy, and Xena appear as cultural morphologies of power, anger, orphanhood, and dual identity. The booklet's pages combine faded train imagery, title cards, checklist material, and object photographs, producing a comic-pop meditation on labor, heroism, and the strange intimacy between corporate fatigue and mythic transformation.
