American Artist Attempts To Sell U.S. Venice Biennale Pavilion To Pay U.S. Debt

MILAN—For the last 3 years, Honolulu-based artist LG Williams has been attempting to finance himself by selling true property.

When invited to participate in the Internet Pavilion at the 54th Edition of the Venice Biennale, he decided to make a huge project located just outside the Biennale and directed at one of the most pressing global issues of the moment—the U.S. financial crisis.

The result will undoubtedly be one of the most surprising and talked about events of the Biennale in recent memory.

FOR SALE BY ARTIST is an unusual way of diminishing the United States Public Debt through the provocative and preposterous attempt to place on sale the United States of America's World Famous Venice Biennale Pavilion.

The USA Pavilion was originally established in 1930 and currently belongs to the Guggenheim Foundation.

Proceeds from the sale (excluding the standard 6% commission fee) of the Pavilion will go directly to the Treasury of the United States of America and toward the repayment of the United States Public Debt, which is the responsibility of the Federal Government of the United States—which as of May 6, 2011 was 14.32 trillion dollars.

No official member of the Guggenheim Foundation has commented publicly on the work, though some whispers can be heard on some tape mutterings "LG is…"

"I know I am not selling it for very much, and I am certain many will laugh," LG Williams says, describing the clandestine action as a reality that secures work that "brings much needed attention and acts as a monitoring device of the U.S. Debt."

Speaking almost paradoxically with his usual elegance and fashion, he continues, "Many will think it's a stupid gesture. Others will think it is brilliant. I don't care. I just want to diminish the debt."

There is no doubt that many powerful art collectors and astute patrons arriving at the pavilion and reading the FOR SALE BY ARTIST sign will ask themselves, "Where can I purchase a limited edition of this brochure for my art collection?"

"At the Gloria Maria Gallery in Milan," the artist will then respond casually with a big smile.

While this is an unusual project for many reasons, it is hardly the first mega project that this artist has brought to the attention of both the art world and the global financial community.

In 2007-09, LG Williams executed what he calls HOUSE ART, a site-specific work in Happy Valley, Hawaii located in Manoa rainforest.

Always remaining determined and attentive to the larger questions that he defines as critical to our time and sculpture in particular, he conceived a visual prophecy, an epicenter, another early project which radically examines local and global influence of "self-interest."

HWTBFO, as it is most commonly known, was the definitive work dedicated to the Subprime Mortgage Crisis, which began in the United States in the winter of 2006 and became the larger financial crisis we face today.

"LG is driven with a keen interest in cardiology, black holes and making money for the poor (namely himself)," says Richard Reisman, who tried to acquire several works by him for the Museum of Modern Art in New York when he was a San Francisco art curator. "Artists give us beautiful things to look at, like amazingly tiny intricate things, but they can also raise huge questions that allow us to rethink hermeneutics or cultural identity art."

The curator describes Williams as a "prophetic artwork made to make art," perhaps most comfortable with surfing but also comfortable prompting scandalous headlines, angry manifestos, tyrannical press releases, and making esoteric artist books, photographs of scantily clad sunbathers, pornographic sculptures and architectural installations which beg for more.

In any case, Williams revels in questions raised by artworks appearing in continental, if not spectacular art settings. "Nothing says this piece couldn't have happened at the, Pompidou, Stedelijk, or the MoMA but this is the fucking Venice Biennial," he says. "My artwork now sits atop the art world at the intersection of every discipline imaginable: visual art, poetry, architecture, tourism, ecology, philately, history and implicit financial doom."

"But in the end, it will really be interesting to see how people react when I deposit the commission check I hope to receive for the sale of the pavilion."

L'Artista Americano tenta di vendere Il Padiglione Americano della Biennale di Venezia per pagare il Debito Pubblico U.S.A.

Milano-Nel corso degli ultimi 3 anni l'artista LG Williams, basato a Honololu, ha cercato di finanziarsi da se vendendo veri e proprio patrimoni.

Nel momento in cui è stato invitato a prender parte al Padiglione Internet in occasione della 54esima Edizione della Biennale di Venezia, ha pensato di creare, proprio fuori dal Padiglione, un enorme progetto indirizzato a una delle questioni internazionali più pressanti del momento – la crisi economica statunitense.

Il suo progetto diventerà, senza dubbio, il più sorprendente e discusso evento delle ultime Edizioni della Biennale.

For Sale by Artist è un modo inusuale, attraverso il provocatorio tentativo di mettere in vendita il Padiglione USA alla Biennale di Venezia, di diminuire il debito pubblico statunitense.

Il Padiglione Usa è stato originariamente istituito nel 1930 e, attualmente, appartiene alla Fondazione Guggenheim.

Il ricavato della vendita (escluso il classico 6% di spese di commissione) del Padiglione verrà direttamente pagato alla Tesoreria degli Stati Uniti e servirà per risanare il Debito Pubblico Statunitense – una questione che rientra nei doveri del Governo Federale degli Stati Uniti – che al 6 maggio 2011 era pari a 14.32 trilioni di dollari.

Nessun membro ufficiale della Fondazione Guggenheim ha commentato pubblicamente l'azione, si è solamanente riusciti a recuperare alcuni mormorii registrati su di una cassetta "LG è…"

"So che non lo si sta vendendo per molto e sono certo che molti rideranno di questo" commenta LG Williams, che descrive quest'azione clandestina come un reality – assicura un lavoro artistico che "porta molta necessaria attenzione e che funge da strumento di sorveglianza del Debito Statunitense".

Parlandone, quasi paradossalmente, con la sua usuale eleganza e il suo stile, continua "Molti penseranno che sia un gesto stupido. Altri che sia un'azione brillante. Non mi importa. Voglio solo diminuire il debito."

Non c'è dubbio che molti potenti collezionisti d'arte e astuti avventori che arrivati davanti al padiglione leggeranno il cartello For Sale By Artist vorranno conoscere "Dove posso comprare l'edizione limitata di questa brochure per la mia collezione d'arte?"

"Presso Gloria Maria Gallery a Milano" risponderà, allora, l'artista in modo disinvolto sorridendo apertamente.

Questo è un progetto non comune per molti ragioni, ma non è certo il primo mega progetto che questo artista ha presentato al mondo dell'arte e alla comunità finanziaria mondiale.
Nel 2007-09, LG Williams ha realizzato un progetto chiamato da lui stesso House Art, un lavoro realizzato specificatamente per un certo luogo, ovvero la Happy Valley, Hawaii, situata nella foresta pluviale in Manui.

Rimanendo determinato e attento alle grandi questioni LG Williams ha definito vitale per il nostro tempo e per la scultura in particolar modo, ha concepito una profezia visuale, un epricentro, un altro precedente progetto che esamina in modo radicale l'influenza locale e globale "dell'interesse personale".

HWTBFO, come è piu comunemente stato conosciuto, è stato il lavoro definitivo dedicato alla crisi del Mutuo e delle Ipoteche, cominciata negli Usa nell'inverno del 2006 e diventata l'attuale crisi finanzia che ci troviamo ad affrontare.

"LG è spinto da un acuto interesse per la cardiologia, i buchi neri e il recuperare del danaro per i poveri (lui stesso incluso)" dice Richard Reisman che ha cercato di acquistare diversi lavori dell'artista ospitati dal Museum of Modern Art di New York quando, ancora, era curatore a San Francisco "Gli artisti ci danno a vedere belle cose, come per esempio oggetti pazzescamente minuscoli ed intricati, ma possono anche sollevare enormi questioni che ci permettono di ripensare alle ermeneutiche e alle identità culturali dell'arte".

Il curatore descrive LG Williams come "un profetico progetto d'arte fatto per fare arte", forse molto piu rassicurante con il surf ma anche adatto a suggerimenti scandalosi per i titoli delle prime pagine, furiosi manifesti, tirannici comunicati stampa, per realizzare libri per artisti attratti dall'esoterico, fotografi appassionati di soggetti sdraiati al sole in costumi e succinti e aderenti, sculture pornografiche e installazioni architettoniche che chiedono di più.

Ad ogni modo, LG Williams, prova piacere nel sollevare questioni attraverso i suoi lavori che appaiono su scala mondiale o, ancora, in scenari spettacolari e artistici.
"Nulla vieta che quest'opera non sia stata creata al Pompidou, allo Stedelijk o al MOMA ma questa è la fottuta Biennale di Venezia" dice "I miei lavori ora siedono ai piani alti del mondo dell'arte in uno spazio di intersezione tra ogni disciplina immaginabile: arte visuale, poesia, architettura, turismo, ecologia, storia e filatela e l'implicito disastro finanziario."

"Alla fine sarà davvero interessante vedere come le persone reagiranno quando depositerò l'assegno della commissione che spero di ricevere dalla vendita del Padiglione."
