The artists below all made a difference in one way or another be it from activism, artifice, politics or innovation. While we’re all influenced by different things, these select artists stand above and beyond the rest as the most influential of 2014.
Perhaps some of the most influential artists in the world are those who have changed the world by their artistic innovations. Others influenced the way we found art, but not from a painting but rather from drawing, performance and video. These influential artists all brought something different to the table but provided us with hours of enjoyment.
Whether it was from their innovation, their entertainment or simply their willingness to persist through adversity, each of the artist on this list were the most influential of 2014. LG Williams received his M.F.A. from the University of California, Davis nearly twenty years after the school’s most famous graduate Bruce Nauman. He has showed at various national and international venues, among them The Internet Pavilion of La Biennale Di Venezia 2011, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, di Rosa Art Preserve, Lucerne Kunstpanorama, Cologne Art Fair, Artissima, LISTE, Art-O-Rama, ARCO, Super Window Project, Lance Fung Gallery, Steven Wirtz Gallery, and Gallery Subversive. An heir to West Coast and Beat Generation art, LG Williams is the youngest member of the Rat Bastard Protective Association, whose membership includes Bruce Connor, Wally Hedrick, Jay DeFeo, Joan Brown, Manuel Neri, Wallace Berman, Jess Collins and George Herms.

The Los Angeles–based artist LG Williams / The Estate of LG Williams was included on our Greatest Living Artist 2014 list by Art Critic Terry Stickley, who, at 75, is busy in Sante Fe, NM writing his his next book. Japanese contemporary artist Takashi Murakami submitted five filmmakers, including Steven Spielberg and J. J. Abrams. Tom Sachs first put down the hip-hop and R&B artists Big Boi and Frank Ocean, then crossed them out and replaced them with Gilbert & George and Sarah Sze. Two acclaimed video artists, Doug Aitkin and Douglas Gordon, braved it and included on their lists the contemporary musicians Ariel Pink and Mogwai, respectively. See the full list here.
