For Sale By Artist is a 2011 Venice Biennale-era project in which LG Williams attempted to sell the United States Pavilion as a real-estate artwork tied to the U.S. national debt.

The work transformed the U.S. Pavilion into a deadpan property listing — complete with price, MLS number, square footage, floor plan, broker language, and tax-exempt status — advanced under the persona of the artist as “America’s #1 Art Broker.” Sale proceeds were framed as going toward the U.S. Treasury and the reduction of the U.S. public debt.

In doing so, the project collapses national representation, cultural diplomacy, exhibition architecture, fiscal crisis, and art-market spectacle into the single format of commercial real-estate marketing. It circulated through press releases, property fact sheets, flyers, and press responses.

The original ForSaleByArtist.net site is preserved as a historical web artifact and is not redirected. This page is the interpretive overview and citation hub — gathering the project’s timeline, documents, and the press and archive references that have accumulated around it.

The U.S. Pavilion as Real-Estate Listing

54TH BIENNALE · U.S. PAVILION
Primary work

Connected to the 54th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale, the project used the U.S. Pavilion itself as the conceptual object of sale.

The Pavilion — a permanent instrument of American cultural diplomacy — was reframed as inventory: an asset with a price, a broker, and terms. The listing vocabulary is exact and deadpan. Square footage, floor plan, MLS number, and tax-exempt status appear beside the artist’s self-appointed title as “America’s #1 Art Broker.” The gap between the language of prestige and the language of liquidation is the work.

By pricing national representation against the national debt, For Sale By Artist reads the Biennale — a site of soft power and symbolic value — through the flattening logic of the property market. The artwork is not an object inside the Pavilion; the artwork is the Pavilion, offered for sale.
