BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY

LG Williams is a Los Angeles-based artist and formerly an Endowed University Instructor at The Academy of Art University. He holds the Emmy Henning Distinguished Professor of Visual Art and Art History position at D(D).DDDD University and the Robert Hughes Distinguished Visual Artist-In-Residence at The Lodge in Hollywood, CA. Williams’s trans-disciplinary practice spans various artistic disciplines, including art criticism and art history.

Williams earned his MFA from the University of California, Davis. His work has been exhibited at numerous national and international venues, including The Internet Pavilion of La Biennale Di Venezia 2011, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, di Rosa Art Preserve, Laguna Art Museum, Klaipėdos Kultūrų Komunikacijų Centras, Cologne Art Fair, Artissima, LISTE, Art-O-Rama, ARCO, Super Window Project, Gloria Maria Gallery, Lance Fung Gallery, Steven Wirtz Gallery, and Gallery Subversive, among others.

Throughout his career, LG Williams has completed artist residencies across the globe, each contributing significantly to his professional and artistic growth. His residencies include prestigious locations such as Le Royal Monceau Raffles in Paris, France; The Brando in Tahiti; Four Seasons Tented Camp Golden Triangle in Thailand; and Jade Mountain Resort in St. Lucia. In South Africa, he spent time at Royal Malewane; in the United Kingdom, he was at The Lanesborough, London. His experiences in the United States include residencies at Twin Farms in Barnard, Vermont, and Halekulani in Oahu, Hawaii. Williams also completed residencies at Likuliku Lagoon Resort in Fiji, Cottar’s Safari Camp in Kenya, The Ritz-Carlton in Okinawa, Japan, Hotel President Wilson in Geneva, Switzerland, and Clayoquot Wilderness Resort on Vancouver Island, Canada. Each of these residencies has played a role in shaping his artistic perspective and creativity.

Williams’s artworks are featured in museums and private collections in Europe, the United States, and Japan. Kenneth Baker, an art critic for the San Francisco Chronicle, said, “Williams wants to create a space where painting can resume in earnest.” His exhibition, “In Absentia,” held at Super Window Project in Kyoto, was reviewed in Artforum magazine in May 2011. In 2014, Donald Preziosi (Emeritus Professor of Art History, UCLA) included Williams in his book “Art, Religion, Amnesia: The Enchantments of Credulity” (Routledge). In 2012, Baron Osuna (Super Window Project) and Gloria Maria Gallery co-curated “LG Williams / The Estate of LG Williams, Anthology: 1985-2012,” a mid-career retrospective exhibition in Milan. Thomas Frangenberg, University of Leicester, wrote the catalog essay for the accompanying publication.

Williams’s work has also been featured in Artforum, The New York Times, Times Literary Supplement, The Guardian, Japan Times, Los Angeles Times, La Stampa, Bookforum, Brooklyn Rail, Purple Diary, Huffington Post, San Francisco Bay Guardian, East Bay Express, Daily Californian, Juxtapoz Magazine, Java Magazine, LA Weekly, OC Weekly, Artweek, Contemporary Art Review Los Angeles (CARLA), and Sacramento Bee, among other publications.

As an heir to West Coast and Beat Generation art, LG Williams is one of the youngest members of the Rat Bastard Protective Association, which includes notable artists such as Bruce Conner, Wally Hedrick, Jay DeFeo, Joan Brown, Manuel Neri, and Wallace Berman.

Throughout his career, Williams has taught studio art, art history, art appreciation, and graphic design courses at institutions including the University of California-Davis, University of Southern California, California College of the Arts, Arizona State University, University of Hawaii, among others.

In 2008, arts reporter Steven Heller selected Williams’s opening sentence from his clandestine introductory essay, written under a pseudonym, for “E Pluribus Venom: The Art of Shepard Fairey” as one of the Top 10 Art Books of the Year for The New York Times Sunday Book Review.

In 2009, Cengage Learning / Wadsworth published Williams’s “Drawing Upon Art: A Workbook for Gardner’s Art Through the Ages” (edited by Dr. Julia Friedman), an innovative pedagogical tool designed to facilitate learning art history through drawing. From 2011 to 2012, Williams served as the art critic for The Tokyo Weekender, Japan’s oldest free English publication.

In 2016, Williams (PCP Press) conceived and produced “Wasted Words” and “Dust Bunnies” by Dave Hickey (the latter volume edited by Dr. Julia Friedman). Both publications were reviewed in the Times Literary Supplement, and events and appearances featuring Hickey and Friedman were held at The UCLA Hammer Museum, SITE Santa Fe, The Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA), and The Las Vegas Contemporary Art Center (CAC). “Wasted Words” also appeared in Netflix’s Velvet Buzzsaw, an art-horror film set in Los Angeles starring Jake Gyllenhaal.

In 2018, Williams published “Wayne Thiebaud Lectures on Art and Drawing,” a compilation of student lectures by the legendary painter who taught Art at the University of California Davis until retiring. The book includes an introductory essay by Dr. Gene Cooper, Professor Emeritus, California State University Long Beach. Williams has also recently published three compilations of ‘tweets’ and ‘Twitter poems’ by the legendary Los Angeles artist-iconoclast Raymond Pettibon: “SCKONTHIS!!,” “Tuff Luv,” and “My Fists Are Free.”

Williams is perhaps best known for his post-consumer, trans-dimensional aesthetic theory called Prosperity Aesthetics™ (PA™). PA™, also referred to as The Prosperity Art Principle, The Wealth Art Principle, or The Principle of Artistic Success, is an aesthetic belief held by many progressive-minded artists. It posits that financial blessings and physical well-being derive from Art’s will. Faith in Art, positive speech, and donations to artistic causes, especially Prosperity Aesthetics LLC, can increase one’s artistic esteem and material wealth, with financial prosperity being the most significant indication of divine creative favor. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, Williams has transformed and empowered more than one hundred thousand Zoom viewers from 20 countries worldwide through his live Prosperity Aesthetics™ seminars.

In 2005, Williams received an Honorary Doctorate from The Institute for Subversive Art and Analysis in Cedar Rapids.
